Through a collection of short stories, a grandfather describes his happy childhood in the small town of Valdosta, Georgia. It was a simple time when children played simple games with simple toys. Those were the days when failure of a child to say "yes ma'am" and "yes sir" to grown folks was considered an act of disrespect which brought swift rebuke and punishment from the disrespected adult and the child's parents. Most homeowners in his neighborhood only dreamed of indoor plumbing, electric lights and home telephone service. Despite the prevailing social order, dictated by racial segregation which choked the advancement of some of his neighbors, little James Edward Alexander was often permitted broader liberties to expand his borders simply because all of the adults encouraged his growth.
Dee Merian's latest work, Southern California Stories, mixes stories about celebrities as well as private American citizens. Stories include snippets about Sarah Vaughan, Gorgeous George, Louella Parsons, Sonja Heine, and Patrick Dennis. Other true stories depict Americans during the stressful times of three different wars.
One of the definitions of the verb deprecate is to belittle. Most of the essays in Foibles do that.
Tom Crawford invites you to enjoy a collection of mostly self-deprecatory vignettes. And when you are an aging author trying to get under or keep under 200 pounds, that is a good thing.
Most stand alone, but a few are excerpted from vignettes to be published in Tom's next book, Resurrections of an Obituary Writer, a compilation of essays and obituaries of the most influential and memorable personages of a lifetime.
Max Judge is pleased to announce the release of The Bronco Girl. The book chronicles the life of Ann Judge-Wegener. Known affectionately by Denver Broncos fans as the "Bronoco Girl," Ann rides Thunder, the Broncos’ mascot, onto INVESCO Field at Mile High at every Broncos home game.
The book's debut on Sunday, September 20th, coincided with the Denver Broncos' first home game of the 2009 season at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
Drippings of the Honeycomb by Anne Sanders Grace is a collection of lovely devotional thoughts in the Christian tradition. Using Proverbs 16:24--"Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones"--as a guide, the author uses the residents and activities of bee colonies as metaphors for purposeful living.
Norm Levy's delightful collection of light verse was released on December 4th. Rhymes for Our Times: Skews on the News is an anthology of quirky extensions of actual headlines that have appeared in newspapers, magazines, or on the Internet.
The headline, as a compressed form of communication, seems to be especially compatible with our cranked-up, quick-cut, low-attention-span society. Whether newsworthy, outrageous, or amusing, headlines invite wry commentary, and Norm has capitalized on this, producing verses on subjects ranging from politics to crime, from science to religion.
