Island Writers' Network
September 13, 2010 -- Minutes

Monday, September 13, 2010 minutes

The Island Writers Network met on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at the Heritage Library; 20 people attended: Ray
Berberian, John Bickers, Devin Bradley, Len Camarda, Tom Crawford, Lorie Getz, Anne Grace, Bobbi Hahn, Jane
Hill, Max Judge, Norm Levy, Sansing McPherson, Dee Merian, Peter Schwarzlose, Greg Smorol, Charlie Thorn;
guests Jeanette Cram, CJ Lyons, Vernie Singleton, and Mel Witmer. Moderator Lorie Getz called the meeting to
order at 7:00 p.m. During introductions our program speaker, author CJ Lyons, commented about good
publishing areas for each person’s genre.

Program:  Medical thriller novelist CJ Lyons spoke on realities of publishing today and the most effective ways to
find an agent. Have a clear sense of your genre; know your target audience; join national genre writing
organizations; develop a platform (or brand—her  brand is “Thrillers with heart”) to prove you are marketable –
create your own web page, blog, give talks about your specialty, teach courses. CJ said editors can no longer
decide to buy a book; acquisition boards do this. Small presses and electronic publishing are now hot prospects.
CJ distributed a Query Took Kit handout with lists of good books, websites, and blogs.

Secretary’s report: Minutes of the June 7 meeting were approved as submitted.

Treasurer’s report:  Greg Smorol reported a balance on hand of $1,531.23.

Book Sales status: Charlie Thorn reported little sales activities over the summer.  Charlie and Tom Crawford
reported that Bay Street Trading, one of the last independent book stores in our area and a willing vendor for
our members books, is closing this month.

Publicity: Bobbi Hahn has agreed to submit publicity releases for IWN.

Web site: Webmaster Jane Hill announced that IWN is now on Facebook, and time-sensitive announcements will
be put there.  Members on Facebook can follow IWN news by will entering "Island Writers Network" in the search
bar on their own Facebook pages, then clicking on "like" after the IWN Facebook page appears.  IWN postings
will then appear on members pages as soon as they are posted..

Arts and Cultural Committee: Lori attended the Sept. 9 meeting, the last one for the year.  A Bravo
subcommittee was appointed, and Lorie is on it.  Several IWN members have expressed willingness to participate
in readings or some other writing event.  Lorie emphasized it must be a freestanding event, not a series.  The
A&C Committee seems eager to add a writing component to the festival, which has only featured the visual and
performing arts in the past.

IWN book display at Heritage Library – Lorie has received approval for the Heritage Library to have a display of
IWN members’ books. Members wishing to participate will need to donate a copy of each book for display.  This
will not involve book sales.

Upcoming meetings: Open Mike - Monday, Sept. 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Heritage Library.

Mon. Oct. 4 - Jim Jordan, historian and author of Savannah Grey.

Mon. Nov. 1 - John Woodring, e-books (Kindle, Nook) and how to publish in that format.

Mon. Dec. 6 – IWN Party – Dee Merian has volunteered to host at her house.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
