Island Writers' Network
The Island Writers’ Network met on Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Heritage Library with twenty people attending:

Getz, Ken Getz, Anne Grace, Bobbi Hahn, Jane Hill, Norm Levy, Darlyne Maranto, Sansing McPherson, Dee
Merian, Greg Smorol, Charlie Thorn, Norma Van Amberg, guest Kathy Rauch, and speaker Joe Distelheim.
Moderator Lorie Getz called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and made introductions.
Program: Sansing McPherson introduced Joe Distelheim, a career journalist now retired to Hilton Head, who
spoke about his experience participating in National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org) last November,
during which he wrote a 50,000-word young-adult novel in 23 days. Joe also discussed the status of print
newspapers today and the importance of their survival to our culture.
Secretary’s report: Minutes of the April 12 meeting were approved as submitted.
Treasurer’s report: Greg Smorol reported a balance on hand of $1,231.12 on May 1.
Book Sales status: Charlie Thorn reported we have 175 copies of the original 550 copies of Hilton Headings.
Sansing McPherson reported approximately 35 copies remain of the first anthology out of the 1,000 copies
printed in 2007.
Bluffton Village Festival: IWN will staff a booth at the festival this Saturday, May 8, to sell our anthologies.
Members may sell their own books as well.

Open Mike will be held Monday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the Heritage Library.
Publishing news: Dee Merian has been selected to present and sign her book The Best Years of Flying at Book
Expo America at the Javits Center in NYC later this month. Bobbi Hahn’s story, “Holding a Heart” is featured in
the May/June issue of the newsletter of Mended Hearts of Dover, DE, an affiliate of the American Heart
Association. Fred Basset has found a publisher, ATTM Press, for his novel, South Wind Rising.
Marketing for Spring/Summer: Members were reminded to check their vendors and restock for the tourist
season. Tom Crawford will place books at the Top of the Lighthouse in Harbour Town and try again to place
books at Mingles at Coligny. The Heritage Library has invited us to display our anthologies and members’ books
at the library.
Upcoming meetings: We need a program for the June 7 meeting. We will not meet in July or August. Medical
mystery author C.J. Lyons will present our program Sept. 13.
