Island Writers’ Network met on Monday, April 7, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Library with 11 people present. Moderator Lorie Getz presided. Treasurer Marilyn Lorenz reported a checking account balance on hand of $1,952.52. She also gave the following results of our anthology sales: Individual member purchases $2,476.96 Vendor paid sales 2,015.67 Miscellaneous cash sales 115.00 Start-up donation from N. Levy 500.00 Total gross receipts $5,107.63 (Various expenses – printing, etc.) - 3,836.94 Total net to date $ 1,270.59 It was moved, seconded, and passed that we repay Norm Levy the $500 he advanced us for start-up, with a great expression of gratitude. Lorie Getz reported on national publishing trends and circulated a list of best-selling genres from Writers’ Digest. Ted Koenig presented a program on marketing our anthology. • He asked us to set a reasonable sales goal, and consensus was that we would like to sell 500 additional copies during the tourist season, Memorial Day to Labor Day. • He suggested we form marketing teams of 4 or more people to support each other with particular assignments and goals. This suggestion received lukewarm acceptance and thus was not fully planned for implementation at this time. • Instead Ted suggested we plan a single focus campaign on Ray Berberian’s suggestion that we market the anthology at the Shelter Cove Tuesday night festival and fireworks event through the summer, where several thousand tourists show up and dozens of vendors sell food and novelties. Lorie Getz will investigate getting permission to be a vendor at the event. Members are asked to volunteer for one or more Tuesday nights through the summer from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. to staff a sales booth. We will use our May 5 meeting to finalize a summer schedule.
