Island Writers' Network
March 5, 2012 -- Minutes
The Island Writers’ Network met on Monday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Heritage Library with 24 people
present: Will Anderson, Ray Berberian, John Bickers, Bob Bredin, Tom Crawford, Sheila Gale, Anne Grace, Bobbi
Hahn, Jane Hill, David Huprich, Norm Levy, Marilyn Lorenz, Sansing McPherson, Janet Morris, Jim Novak, David
Schofield, Jim Schulze, Peter Schwarzlose, Greg Smorol, Charlie Thorn, Norma Van Amberg, Gene Youtz; guest
Wilbur Cross and program presenter Lynda Bouchard.

Moderator Tom Crawford called the meeting to order at 7:03, followed by introductions.

Program: Lynda Bouchard, author concierge, publicist, and founder of Booking Authors Ink, shared her
experiences on the road with authors. She advised writers to get reviews of proof copies and publish blurbs on
the cover when the book comes out. She advised authors to aggressively market their books and to use social
media and current technology to market most effectively. Selling to groups – e.g., book clubs, church groups,
book fairs – is more successful than selling in a bookstore. She recommended investing in bookmarks with
cover photo, ISBN, and website on them. She suggested imbedding a QR (Quick Response) code on the
bookmark so smart phones can scan them for detailed information.

Minutes of the February 6 meeting were approved as submitted electronically.
Treasurer’s report by Greg Smorol showed a balance of $2,775.46.

Publishing news: Jane Hill announced she has put Hilton Head Island: Unpacked & Staying, our first anthology,
on Kindle for $4.99 with 70% royalties. One copy has sold.
Tom Crawford reported receiving $100 payment for books sold by Lighthouse Shops and payment from E.
Shaver in Savannah.

Open Mike – Norm Levy said there were 14 people at the February 20 Open Mike. Next Open Mike is Monday,
March 19, at 7:00 p.m.

Editorial Board – Sansing McPherson reported that we have at least 68 submissions. Final submission deadline
is Thursday, March 15. Editors will work with authors to help get manuscripts publishable.

Committee on Branding and Title – Marilyn Lorenz reported the committee met twice in person and once via
email, and did marketing studies with 4 groups totaling 126 women, our most prevalent buyers. Three titles and
accompanying art were offered: Hilton Head Island: Dive Right In, Hilton Head Island: Living the Dream, Hilton
Head Island: If the Shoe Fits. Sansing moved that we wait one month to consider these ideas and vote in April.
Motion carried.  Tom Crawford and the membership thanked the committee for good work.

Arts and Cultural Committee: Tom reported the committee is considering a 2 to 3-week cultural festival in the
fall, perhaps October.

New Business: Sansing announced the Bluffton Village Festival will be Saturday, May 12, from 10 to 4 on
Calhoun Street. Non-profits may buy a 10’ x 10’ space for $75. If several authors are interested, we can share
cost of the space. Wilber Cross suggested we look into a book booth at the Farmers Market at Honey Horn
Plantation where booth price is low.

Announcements: Anne Grace shared two news articles about area writers and suggested we keep track of them
for possible programs and networking. Jane Hill shared information from Book Image, a company that will
format a book and provide cover art for a reasonable price. The website is www.bookimagedesigns.com.

Next Meeting is Monday, April 2, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
