Altstaetter, Ray Berberian, Len Camarda, Tom Crawford, Lorie Getz, Ken Getz, Bobbi Hahn, Bob Hamel, Jane Hill, Max Judge, Norm Levy, Dee Merian, Charlie McOuat, Sansing McPherson, Dee Merian, Greg Smorol, Charlie Thorn; program presenter Don Nelson, and guests David Kelly, Lorie McOuat, and 4 unnamed visitors. Program: Moderator Lorie Getz called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Jane Hill introduced the program presenter, Don Nelson, a photographer and instructor for the Hilton Head Art League. Don distributed handouts and demonstrated basic Photoshop Elements 8 skills, e.g. saving as a TIFF file, resizing, inserting in text, working with layers, and converting a photo to pen-and-ink effect. Business: The business meeting began at 8:10. Minutes of the Nov. 2, 2009, meeting were approved as submitted. Treasurer Max Judge reported a balance of $64.61 after paying Catawba for 550 books. Additional book sales funds of $550 were given to Max at the meeting. Anthology sales: Charlie Thorn, distribution chair, circulated a sheet showing 277 copies sold, or otherwise distributed on consignment, leaving an inventory of 270 copies. Gallery Hop: Sansing McPherson distributed postcards and address labels for members to address inviting friends to our book signing as part of the Gallery Hop on Thurs., Jan. 14, at Picture This Art Gallery, 124 Arrow Rd. Signing time is 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Dress is island casual. Publishing News: Norm Levy has published Rhymes for Our Times, his collection of wry observations on news items over several decades. Salt Marsh Cottage Books is his publisher. Lorie Getz reported a writer friend of hers recommends Createspace.com, a division of Amazon, as a publisher because they use Ingram distributors and have on-line sales. Writing Contests: 1. Piccolo Fiction Open – Theme: “Present Tense.” Word limit 1,000 words. Deadline March 10, 2010. Send stories in a .doc document (not .docx) attached to one email to both thompsonl@ci.charleston.sc.us and lisa@eatgoodbread.com. (More detailed attachment emailed to IWN membership on 1/3/2010.) 2. Amazon.com and Penguin Group (USA) – 3rd annual Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Competition. Two grand prizes, one for best general fiction and one for best young adult novel.
