Monday, October 6, 2008 Minutes

Hilton Head IWN met on Monday, October 6, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Library.  Jane Hill served as acting moderator
since Moderator Lorie Getz was out of the country.  Eight people attended the main part of the meeting:  Will Anderson, Tom
Crawford, Bobbi Hahn, Jane Hill, Max Judge, Norm Levy, Marilyn Lorenz, and Sansing McPherson.  Two other members, Brian
Baxter and Dee Merian, arrived after an unusually early adjournment due to previous commitments.  [See note at end]

Minutes were approved as submitted.

Treasurer’s report:  Marilyn Lorenz reported a balance on hand of $1,347.55.   She will send in a $200 donation to Arts Council of
Beaufort County approved by the membership in September.

Publishing news:  Fred Bassett has published 13 poems this year with more coming out soon.  James Edward Alexander has
networked with an attorney colleague in California to have his autobiographical trilogy shown to several agents.

Marketing:

·         Dee Merian and James Edward Alexander will participate in a book signing at the Hilton Head Barnes & Noble for a
statewide event on Nov. 1 or 2 for the SC School for Deaf and Blind (SCSDB) and Walker Foundation.  Jane Hill will participate in
the SCSDB event in Charleston at the same time.

·         Jane Hill will market the IWN anthology at the Moss Creek Arts and Crafts Show on Sat., Oct. 25 from 10 to 3, along with
her two books and Max Judge’s book.

·         Jane will participate in the Savannah Children’s Book Festival on Nov. 15 at Forsyth Park .

·         Tom Crawford wrote to Lois Claus, librarian at the Seabrook asking to have the IWN anthology on display for residents to
order.  Tom is a resident of the Seabrook.

·         A motion passed unanimously that we pay the necessary cost to Catawba Press to print a minimal inventory of our
anthology to be sold on line with a credit card.  Jane Hill will take care of setting up the account with Catawba.  A minimal
printing should cost about $20.

Service Project:  A writing project with Hardeeville Elementary.  [See note at end.]

Upcoming dates:

·      No Open Mike on Oct. 20 since Norm Levy will be out of town and not one else in attendance was able to chair or attend.

·      November 3 Program – Kathryn Wall, an IWN charter member and author of the 8-book Bay Tanner mystery series, will speak
on her own pathway to publication and then spend time for a Q&A on whatever topics members wish to discuss.

·      December 1 Meeting will be a Holiday party at the home of Sansing McPherson.  IWN will purchase drinks; members are
asked to bring food; guests are welcome.  Sansing will need a firm RSVP list so she can request gate passes for those not living
in Hilton Head Plantation.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.

Post-meeting developments:  Brian Baxter arrived shortly after adjournment with information about the writing project at
Hardeeville Elementary where his wife is principal.  The teachers are eager to participate, and the principal wants to schedule a
kick-off event in October or November.  Dee Merian has agreed to set up the kick-off event.
