Revision Guidelines for Third IWN Anthology
|
In revising, take care to correct all punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors. You as the writer can
decide which editing suggestions to follow or reject, but be sure your intended meaning will be clear
to the reader.
Print out this document to use as a checklist as you prepare your revised submission.
Submissions go to all 4 members of the Editorial Board:
• Judy Finman jfinman@earthlink.net
• Lorie Getz drlmgetz@netscape.com
• Sansing McPherson sansterry@roadrunner.com
• Norma Van Amberg nvanamberg@hargray.com
Revision deadline Monday, June 4, or earlier. You will submit 3 documents:
1. Electronic copy of revision sent to all 4 editors as a Word attachment, saved as .doc, .txt, or .rtf
file. (No .docx or .pdf files . We can’t reformat for you this time.)
2. Paper copy of your revised article given/mailed to one editor
3. Original paper copy with editing notes given/mailed to same editor
Length: Some pieces we hope to use are too long and need to be cut as close to 3,500 words as
possible. Use concise language; don’t overuse adjectives and adverbs.
Manuscript format:
1. Choose a standard, legible font, e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Cambria, in 12-point pitch.
2. Center title on top line, 1 inch down from top, in regular font and pitch – no quote marks, no
special font, no bold, no all-caps.
3. Title is followed by one line drop before by-line.
4. By-line should be centered with your name as you want it to appear in the book (Ex. --By
Jonathan Doe). No special font, no bold, no italics.
5. Indent each paragraph using Tab key once. Do not use space bar to indent.
6. Avoid hard returns (hitting ENTER on a PC, or RETURN on a Mac) except at end of .
7. No extra space between paragraphs.
8. Double space the body. Go to Format menu; then to > Paragraph > Line spacing.
9. Do not put anything into a header or footer - no page numbers, name, or footnotes.
10. With poetry, do not worry about stanzas breaking at the wrong spot on your page.
Formatting for the actual book will be very different, and Jane Hill will take care of it.
11. For a hard line break use SHIFT/ENTER (Ex: when inserting break in your text).
12. For a hard page break use CONTROL/ENTER (Ex: when poem goes to new page).
13. We welcome art and photos appropriate to your story. Submit as .jpg or .pdf file.
Writing Standards and Conventions – Chicago Manual of Style used for consistency.
1. We standardized many grammatical conventions for uniformity throughout. (E.g. - Okay v. OK,
e-mail v. email, writing out numbers under one hundred)
2. Proofread for spelling, grammar, and typos; have someone else proofread it as well. Editors
will not look kindly on such errors in a revision.
Remember, the editing and revision process is how good writers become even better.
